The Kashmir Valley is a wide, green bowl ringed by the Himalaya and the Pir Panjal range. Srinagar, the summer capital, spreads around Dal Lake, where travelers can stay on carved wooden houseboats and cross the water by shikara.
From Srinagar, day trips and short stays reach Gulmarg for its gondola and winter skiing, Pahalgam for river valleys and pine forests, and Sonamarg for glaciers. Each season changes the valley completely, from spring tulips to autumn chinar leaves and winter snow.

Best time to visit Kashmir

Spring blossom and the tulip garden (usually late March to April), then pleasant early summer. Popular and busy in May and June.
- Sep–OctBest
Clear skies and the chinar trees turning red and gold. Quieter than spring.
- Dec–FebGood
Snow in Gulmarg and Pahalgam and ski season. Very cold, and roads can close after heavy snowfall.
- Jul–AugMixed
Warm and green, but busy during the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage, when Pahalgam and Sonamarg are crowded and security is heavy.

How to reach Kashmir
By train
Trains from Katra now run through to Srinagar over the Chenab rail bridge, opened in 2025. Jammu and Katra have connections from the rest of India.
By road
The Jammu–Srinagar highway is about 250 km, usually 6–8 hours. Shared taxis and buses run the route; landslides and snow can close it.

The Gulmarg gondola is the biggest single activity cost, especially the second phase to Apharwat; book tickets online in peak season. Agree shikara and pony prices before you set off.

Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi, then the old city's Jamia Masjid and Khanqah of Shah-e-Hamadan.

Day trip to Gulmarg for the gondola, the meadows in summer, or snow in winter.

Drive to Pahalgam along the Lidder river and stay overnight.

- Security conditions in Kashmir can change, and some meadows and trails have been closed at times. Check current government travel advisories and ask your host about local conditions before day trips.
- Mobile network
- Prepaid SIMs from other states have historically not worked in Jammu and Kashmir; postpaid connections usually do.
- Houseboats
- Book a registered houseboat directly or through a trusted platform, and confirm what's included (meals, shikara transfers) before paying.
- Dress and customs
- Kashmir is conservative; dress modestly, especially at mosques and shrines, and ask before photographing people.
