Hampi was Vijayanagara, one of the largest and richest cities in the world in the 1500s. Today its temples, bazaars, and royal enclosures are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, scattered across boulder hills along the Tungabhadra river.
Most people stay in Hampi Bazaar near the Virupaksha Temple or across the river in quieter Virupapur Gaddi, and spend their days cycling between sites.

How to reach Hampi
By road
Overnight sleeper buses run from Bengaluru, Goa, and Hyderabad to Hosapete or Hampi.
By air
The small Vidyanagar (Toranagallu) airport is about 40 km away with limited flights; Hubballi is about 160 km away.

Most of Hampi's sites are free. The Vittala Temple ticket also covers the Lotus Mahal (Zenana Enclosure) and the Elephant Stables on the same day; foreign nationals pay a higher rate.
