Ooty (Udhagamandalam) sits at about 2,240 m in the Nilgiri Hills, where British officials once escaped the summer heat of Madras. Its botanical garden, lake, and old bungalows are still here, surrounded by tea estates and forest.
The best part of the trip is often getting there: the Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs from Mettupalayam through tunnels and tea gardens. Nearby Coonoor is smaller and quieter, and many travelers prefer it as a base.
