Puducherry, still widely called Pondicherry, was the capital of French India until 1954. Its White Town has French street names, colonial villas, and bougainvillea over yellow walls, while the Tamil quarter across the canal has temples, markets, and old Tamil houses.
It's an easy, slow place: walk or cycle the grid, watch the sunrise over the sea, and take a day for Auroville and the beaches to the north and south.

Heritage guesthouses in the French Quarter cost more than stays across the canal. A bicycle is enough for the town; rent a scooter for Auroville and the beaches.
