About WanderTrail

WanderTrail is a free travel planner for people in India who start with a budget, not a destination. Tell it how much you can spend, how many days you have, when you can go and where you're starting from, and it shows places where that actually works, with costs in rupees.

Who makes it

WanderTrail is an independent project, built and run by Joicy Joy from Aluva, Kerala. It isn't owned by a travel agency, booking site or hotel chain, and it doesn't sell trips: you book directly with whoever you choose.

Most travel sites show you somewhere beautiful first and the cost later. WanderTrail works the other way round, the way most trips in India are actually planned: around a fixed amount, a long weekend and the train or bus that gets you there.

What's on the site

  • Travel guides: 30 destinations in India and 10 in Nepal, each with when to go, how to get there, a day-by-day itinerary, typical costs, and notes for travelling with children or a dog. Browse the guides.
  • Discover: places ranked against your budget, days, month and starting city, with the reason each one fits or doesn't.
  • Planning tools: compare places side by side, break a budget down, check a route's travel times, build an editable itinerary, keep an offline copy, and let friends vote on where to go.
  • Local guides: guides who know a place apply to be listed, and we review every profile before it goes live.

How the guides are written

Each guide is researched and written for WanderTrail. We use AI tools to help research and draft, and check seasons, routes, permits and typical prices against official tourism, transport and permit sources and operators' published rates before publishing. Costs are typical per-person ranges, last reviewed September 2026, and each guide shows when it was reviewed.

Anything that changes often, such as permit rules, road status and entry fees, links to the official source rather than repeating a figure that may go out of date. Photos are from Unsplash and credited on each page.

Spotted something wrong or out of date? Tell us and we'll fix it.

How the AI planner works

The trip suggestions, itineraries and assistant replies are generated by AI models (currently from Groq, OpenRouter and Anthropic), then checked by WanderTrail against your constraints: the season for your month, travel time from your city, and whether the total fits your budget. They're a starting point for planning, not quotes: confirm prices, timings and rules before you book.

How it's paid for

WanderTrail is free to use. We plan to cover running costs with advertising on some public guide pages, never inside your trips or account. We don't sell your data, and we don't take payment to include or rank a place. See the privacy policy for the details.

If WanderTrail has helped you, you can also chip in towards running costs with a coffee. It's optional, and nothing on the site depends on it.

Enjoying WanderTrail?

It's free, and it stays free. If it helped you plan a trip, you can buy me a coffee to help with the running costs. Entirely optional.
