Bandipur was a busy stop on the trade route between India and Tibet. When the highway was built in the valley below, trade moved on and the town stayed much as it was: a main street of brick houses with carved windows, now closed to cars and lined with cafés and guesthouses.

It's an easy break on the Kathmandu–Pokhara road, 8 km up from Dumre on the highway. One or two nights is enough for a sunrise, a cave and a village walk.

Kids and pets

Visiting Bandipur with kids or pets

With kids

Good with planning
  • With no cars on the main street, children can wander the bazaar safely.
  • Trails to Thani Mai and Siddha Cave are steep and uneven; carry small children in a sling or carrier.
  • Siddha Cave is dark, slippery and needs some scrambling, so it suits older children with a guide.
Find kid-friendly trips

With pets

Possible with planning
  • Crossing into Nepal with a pet needs a vet health certificate and border quarantine clearance; check the current rules first.
  • The quiet, car-free bazaar is pleasant for a dog, and some guesthouses accept pets. Confirm before you book.
  • Come by your own car; tourist buses rarely take pets.

Pet and child policies vary by stay and operator and change often. Confirm before you book.

Practical tips

Cash
ATMs are few and can run out. Bring enough Nepali rupees from Kathmandu or Pokhara.
Getting up from Dumre
Agree the taxi fare before you set off, or wait for the local bus.
Quiet evenings
Most cafés close early, and the town is calm after dark. It's a place to slow down, not party.
