Tawang sits at about 3,000 m in the far west of Arunachal Pradesh. Its 17th-century monastery, home to hundreds of monks, looks down over a valley of prayer flags, pine forests and high-altitude lakes.

The journey is long: two days by road from Guwahati, climbing over Sela Pass at about 4,170 m. That's also the reason to go. The road passes through Bhalukpong, Bomdila and Dirang, and the landscape changes from tropical forest to alpine lakes. Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit, which is easy to get online.

By air

Guwahati has the most flights. Tezpur is closer to the hills. A helicopter service from Guwahati runs on some days but is weather-dependent and books out.

By train

Guwahati or Rangapara North stations, then by road.
