Gokarna is two places in one. The town is an old Hindu pilgrimage centre around the Mahabaleshwar Temple, with a busy main street and a sacred beach. South of it, a chain of coves (Kudle, Om, Half Moon, and Paradise) is separated by rocky headlands and linked by a walking trail.
Most travelers stay at Kudle or Om beach in simple huts and guesthouses, walk the coast in the mornings, and do very little in the afternoons. It works well on its own or combined with Goa or Hampi.

How to reach Gokarna
By road
Buses run from Goa, Hubballi, Mangaluru, and Bengaluru (overnight). From Goa it's about 3–4 hours by road.
By air
Goa's airports are the nearest with regular flights; Hubballi is another option.

Walking the beach trail is free; boats between the beaches save the walk back but add up. Prices rise sharply around Christmas and New Year.

- Currents are strong and drownings have happened at these beaches. Swim only where it's calm and lifeguards or locals say it's safe, never after drinking, and not in the monsoon.

- Start the coastal walk in the morning, carry water, and don't walk the rocks after dark.

- Dress modestly in town and at the temple, and follow the rules posted at the entrance.
