Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Siddhartha Gautama was born. The Sacred Garden holds the Maya Devi Temple over the birth spot, the pond where his mother is said to have bathed, and a pillar Emperor Ashoka raised when he visited in 249 BCE.

For much of North India it's the closest trip into Nepal: cross at Sunauli from Gorakhpur, and pair it with Kushinagar, where the Buddha died, on the Indian side.

Kids and pets

Visiting Lumbini with kids or pets

With kids

Great for kids
  • The site is flat and open, and cycling between the monasteries makes a fun day for older children.
  • From April to June it's very hot with little shade. Go early, carry water and plan a long midday rest.
  • The Sacred Garden is a place of worship; younger children may need reminding to keep their voices down.
Find kid-friendly trips

With pets

Not recommended
  • Taking a pet into Nepal needs a vet health certificate and clearance from Nepal's animal quarantine office at the border. Check the current rules before you go.
  • Temples and monasteries don't allow animals, and the plains get very hot.
  • If you're driving from Gorakhpur with a dog, consider a day trip and keep the dog in the car only in the cooler months.

Pet and child policies vary by stay and operator and change often. Confirm before you book.
