Orchha was the capital of the Bundela kings, and it still has the palaces, temples and cenotaphs to prove it, scattered along the Betwa River. The town itself is small and relaxed, with far fewer visitors than its monuments deserve.

It's easy to reach from Delhi by fast train to Jhansi, and it pairs well with Khajuraho, a half-day drive away. Two days is enough to see it properly without rushing.

River safety
Only go rafting or swimming in the Betwa with an operator, and never in the monsoon when the river runs high.
