Chikkamagaluru (often written Chikmagalur) is where coffee first took root in India, according to the legend of Baba Budan. Today the hills around the town are covered in coffee and pepper estates, many of which welcome guests in homestays.
Most visitors come for slow mornings on an estate, sunrise from Mullayanagiri, and drives to waterfalls and viewpoints. It's about 5 hours from Bengaluru by road, which makes it one of the best 2–3 day escapes from the city.
When to go
Green hills after the monsoon, clear sunrises and cool nights. Coffee blossom season follows the first rains in February–March.
Warmer days but still pleasant on the estates; good for a quiet visit.
Heavy monsoon rain: spectacular waterfalls and mist, but leeches, slippery trails and closed treks.
